The California Chapter is heavily involved in educating owners and rescuing abused animals. Many people in their area do not take care of their chinchillas once they become owners and they are trying to alleviate that problem. They regularly hold health and education clinics including days like Pet Pride Day. California recently held their annual meeting and now list 37 members in their chapter.
The "Joy of Chinchillas" 7th edition is underway with a projected launch date of Christmas 2006. They are in the process of obtaining an ISBM (International Standard Book Number) for this edition and it will be available for sale on Amazon.com, Ebay, etc.
Dawn Hofer has an Ebay Store for "chinchilla" merchandise and is looking for anything "chinchilla" to sell. Presently, they are using molds crafted from old trophies to make chocolates, soaps and candles.
Rescues have been done but some are still in need of homes. Some of these rescues have come from homes were the owner died in a car accident, others with owners who became terminally ill and could no longer care for the animals.
Health Days are overwhelmingly successful as they try to inform the public on the proper care of chinchillas.
